The Casey Center for Faith & Community Service

Where Social Justice Education Meets Real-World Impact

Transform Your Students’ Understanding of Civil Rights and Social Justice

In the heart of Alabama’s Black Belt, where history meets present-day challenges, the Edmundite Missions offers college students an unparalleled opportunity to engage in meaningful social justice work through our Casey Center for Faith & Community Service. Since 1937, we have stood at the intersection of civil rights advocacy and community development, creating a unique environment where students can understand the complex realities of systemic poverty and social inequality.

A Living Laboratory for Social Change

Our location in Selma, Alabama – a cornerstone of the civil rights movement – provides students with direct exposure to both historical struggles and contemporary challenges. Here, in one of America’s poorest regions, students witness firsthand how issues of poverty, healthcare access, and economic opportunity intersect with race and rural geography.

Immersive Learning Experience

Students engage in comprehensive community development programs spanning education, workforce development, health and wellness, and nutrition. They work alongside experienced advocates and community leaders, gaining practical experience while developing deep understanding of how systemic change occurs. Our programs include working with Black farmers reclaiming their agricultural heritage, supporting nutrition education initiatives, and participating in healthcare access programs for underserved communities.

Beyond Volunteer Work

This isn’t just another volunteer program. The Casey Center experience develops future leaders who understand:

  • The complex interplay between poverty, race, and rural economics
  • How sustainable community development works in practice
  • The importance of dignity-centered service
  • The ongoing nature of the civil rights struggle
  • The real-world application of social justice principles

Modern Facilities, Deep Impact

Kenyon Hall offers comfortable accommodations with eight ensuite bedrooms, community spaces, and modern amenities. But more importantly, it provides a sacred space where students can reflect on their experiences and develop a deeper understanding of their role in creating social change.

Why Choose the Casey Center?

Your students will gain invaluable experience working in one of America’s most challenged regions while developing practical skills in community development, cultural competency, and social justice advocacy. They’ll return to campus with not just experiences to share, but with transformed perspectives on poverty, race, and social change in America.

The struggle that began on Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge continues today in different forms. Give your students the opportunity to be part of this ongoing movement for justice and equality.
